The recent shooting in Colorado has raised many questions about God and the problem of evil. While this question has often been raised in similar circumstances, I do feel a deep desire for people to understand the nature of God and the reality of the world we are born into. I feel thousands are looking for answers and I want to help those that listen, to understand and come to the full assurance of that understanding. That means we can come to the point of confidence by not wavering in our understanding of God, His nature, His will and His plans.
It is my prayer that your hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ. (Colossians 2:2)
God is not double minded. He does not like or support evil, death, sickness etc… A double minded man is unstable in all his ways and to believe in a double minded God would make His followers unstable in all their thoughts and ways. When we do not understand that God has set up a world that operates through the choices of people, we create false teachings to try and comfort people. Attributing evil to God as part of His will makes unbelievers hate God and they do not trust in His goodness. On the other hand, it makes believers (or unbelieving believers) powerless against the forces of evil that seek to steal, kill and destroy.
“Attributing the evils & misfortunes of life to God’s will, has been theologically and pastorally disastrous.”-Anonymous. I would like to add that it has been “experientially” disastrous, because it genuinely propels experiential bondage and darkness into people’s lives, even in the name of God. Our perfect heavenly Father is better than the best earthly Father (Matthew 7:11) and a great earthly father NEVER abuses His kids, gives them sickness or wants evil to befall them. God’s ways are not the world’s ways. They are much better and higher. We can learn to let God’s ways become our ways by understanding who He really is.
Where Understanding Is Found
Though it cost all you have, get understanding. – Proverbs 4:7
Colossians 2:2 revealed to us that full assurance of understanding is found in Christ. While this verse clearly states the mystery is revealed in Christ, we must know that the mystery for many has been everything from, “What is the meaning of life?” to “Why did God allow my mother to die?” to “Why do bad things happen?” Today, regardless of those questions, the mystery is understood in Christ. Christ once and for all brought into view the exact nature of God. His nature opposes evil and seeks to destroy its works, not through violence, but through love and power. In Christ we understand the world is at war and those who partner with God correctly tend to see great results in the vanquishing of evil in and around their life. The more people understand and want to follow Christ in His mission to restore the earth, the more the earth is restored.
We can now understand why those who follow Christ experience the most in life. Jesus said that those who follow Him enter into a life that is abundant and overflowing. Not only is this because people get to know the One who loves and created them, but they get to join Him in the journey of destroying the works of darkness and setting up the Kingdom of God (1 John 3:8,Luke 10:9). Where the Kingdom of God is released, sickness disappears, oppression leaves and joy and wholeness fills people’s lives.
All this is why those advancing the Kingdom in the earth must continue to cast down arguments raised up against the knowledge of God. Arguments like, “God allowed this baby to be born with no legs for a reason, to reveal the glory of God” or “God allowed this car accident because he has a plan to bring good from it, for all things work for the good of those who love Him” Or even, “God gave this person this sickness to teach them a lesson.” These arguments go directly against the nature of Christ and only add confusion to a God who is not the author of it. This is why it is important to understand the nature of life from a view of God wanting to partner with us to see evil destroyed. Christ is the perfect example and as someone has said before, He is perfect theology.
We must understand the issue of evil and the fact that God directly opposes it. We also must understand that God’s main source of preventing evil is through people who get to know Him and display the ways of His Kingdom to others. What would have happened if the possessed man that shot people in a Colorado movie theatre would have encountered a powerful child of God on the street or at his school? What if someone gave this young man a prophetic word on the street that revealed the deep desires of this young man, while also revealing the deep plans God has to give him a future and a hope? What would have happened if people in the city were advancing a culture of faith and power that loved these sorts of people to wholeness? These are the types of questions that should spur people to understand the war we are in and the necessity to know who God really is and what His will is in the earth. These questions should help us continue to create cultures of love, power and faith in the true knowledge of God so evil can be destroyed and prevented.
When we empower people to know God and operate in the power of His heart, we will continue to advance the light of His kingdom that transforms someone who may have eventually killed people in a movie theatre. We would continue to reveal the light of love, acceptance and possibility that brings true life. A life that, instead of going into movies theatres to kill people, goes into the movie industry to bring life to the world. A life that can bring new innovations to the world. A life that could be full of love to make the world a better place. A place like Heaven. This is what God is about. His will is for it to be in earth as it is in heaven. No movie theatres get shot up in heaven.
I want to extend the realm of my Fathers Kingdom by forgiving this young man who shot and killed people. I wish him the best on his life on earth and beyond. Even if it is behind prison bars. I invite you to do the same. To live in the power of forgiveness and truth with a heart that longs to see the Kingdom of God further understood and established in the world. A Kingdom that sets prisoners free from behind the bars of misunderstanding the nature, will and heart of God.
“I hope this evil act…doesn’t shake people’s faith in God” – said a victim’s family member in the theatre shooting.
I agree. I hope this act elevates people’s faith to the point of believing Gods will is to stop evil by partnering with others to establish His Kingdom of peace and wholeness. Gods will was not done in this shooting but His will can be known to those who will act on the nature of what it promoted.
